Xiong’an New Area: China’s Future-forward Smart City

Smart city planning and urban tech will usher the rural area into a smart, connected future. The brainchild and dream of Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Xiong’an New Area project, announced in April of 2017, is poised to revolutionize the daily lives of the city’s locals, and create a smart city that symbiotically balances technological and ecological efficiency and innovation. And while the New Area is still currently mostly rural territory, an estimated RMB 4 trillion (US$580 billion) will be invested over the next two decades, in order to implement the President’s “Millenium Strategy” and transform Xiong’an into one of China’s most technologically advanced and successful business epicenters.
Here’s how:

The establishment of a vice-capital in Xiong’an

To relieve pressure currently placed on urban administrations dealing with over-populated metropolises, institutions with non-governmental functions, such as hospitals, colleges, financial organizations, and other public services, will be relocated to Xiong’an. This will lead the New Area to become an attractive area for current city dwellers feeling tired of traveling far within a single, expanding city’s bounds to reach particular offices and facilities, as well as for new immigrants who have been priced out of expensive, existing urban areas and able to acquire gainful employment in Xiong’an.

The integration of high-speed transportation to and from major metropolises

For those already employed in some of China’s major metropolises, the New Area will be outfitted with six high-speed train lines that connect Xiong’an to Beijing, Tianjin and other popular Hebei province destinations. Worth roughly RMB 600 billion (US$91 billion) and expected to be completed by 2020, these trains will run on smart and efficient technology. This will enable passengers to travel to and from Xiong’an at speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour.

Installation of the latest urban tech for daily use

The backbone of Xiong’an’s smart city infrastructure will be 5G communication technology. It will help connect the city’s integrated urban tech, as well as locals’ digital devices, cars and more, and could allow anyone to access the network at any time. As such, 5G is poised to pave the way towards a future where unmanned services, autonomous vehicles and always-on city management can become safe, efficient and profitable realities. It is also expected to enable better, more widespread use of AI, IoT and other innovative urban technologies to make everyday urban operations and activities easier, more connected, and more informed.

Relocation of top technology plants to Xiong’an

And thanks to the integration of advanced urban tech, Xiong’an is becoming an attractive hub for the establishment of top Chinese technology companies’ development plants. Major technology companies, such as Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent, have already announced that they will be opening branches in the New Area, and telecommunication companies, including China mobile, Unicom, and Telecom, will use the new smart city as a base for testing their 5G wireless networks. This will not only create new jobs in Xiong’an, but it will also position the New Area as the first stop for innovative tech testing and implementation, making the smart city even smarter, with each new development and release.

Prioritization of green energy and development

The Chinese government has made it its mission to achieve 100 percent clean power in Xiong’an, all powered by renewable and lower-carbon energy sources. In fact, extreme restrictions and even bans will be placed again factories with high carbon emissions, and roughly 52 percent of the New Area’s power will come from electricity. What’s more, urban tech enabling smart reporting on green energy use and abuse will enable the municipality to financially reward locals who report on violators.

Bottom line

Xiong’an New Area is bringing exciting new technological and organizational innovation to China, alleviating much pressure on existing cities, while making locals’ city life smarter and more connected than ever before.
